5 Now if you will pay careful attention to what I say and keep my covenant, then you will be my own treasure from among all the peoples, for all the earth is mine; 6 and you will be a kingdom of cohanim for me, a nation set apart.’ These are the words you are to speak to the people of Isra’el.” Exodus 19:5-6 (CJB)
This is a time of celebration commemorating of the giving of the Torah (the commands that were given & covenant Adonai entered into with Israel on Mt Sinai) and the out-pouring of Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit) which was given on this day when YYHVH came down on Mt. Sinai (Ex 19) in fire and billowing smoke. When Yeshua was glorified and exalted to the throne of YHVH, He sent forth the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit) and the Body of Messiah was born and entered into an everlasting covenant which cannot be broken.
Did you know?
- The Hebrew word Shavuot is the Greek translation of the word Pentecost, meaning “50”. It is the celebration and remembrance of giving of the Torah and the outpouring of the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit).
- Shavuot is celebrated 50 days from First Fruits, which ties Shavuot to the celebration of Passover with Yeshua’s crucifixion to His resurrection.
- Waiting for the Ruach parallels to counting the Omer (measure of barley); this is the time of First Fruits and Unleavened Bread. Just as the farmer was instructed not to use the wheat crop until the designated times of offering loaves-so therefore Yeshua (Bread of Life) had to ascend before the rest of the grain (the Disciples) could receive the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit) and walk in His power.
- The giving of the Torah and the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit) is a part of Adonai’s covenant fulfillment.
- Shavuot should remind us of the marriage contract.
| What is included in a marriage contract/wedding | Yeshua (Jesus) taught of His Husbandman commitment |
| The price for the bride | “Messiah paid it all” Isaiah 53.5, 1 Peter 2.24, Romans 5.8 |
| The groom is required to prepare a home for the bride, approved by the groom’s father. | “I go to prepare a place…” John 14.1-3 |
| Neither groom or bride knows when the father will give approval, so they have to be ready at a moment notice. | “No man knows the hour…” Matthew 24.36, 1 Corinthians 1.7, 1Thess. 1.10 |
| The groom will come for his bride often at night. | 1 Thess. 5.2, Revelation 16.15 |
| The guest are notified at last minute. | Matthew 22.8 |
| Best man shout for joy after the consummation has taken place-the groomsmen relay message to guest. | John 3.29 (John the Baptizer saw himself as the best man, noting the end of his task and the beginning of Yeshua’s). John says, “Joy has been fulfilled in me.” |
- The story of Ruth takes place during the wheat harvest season and is read during Shavuot. The book of Ruth is read because of its association with Abraham and the promises of Adonai.
Other scriptures read during Shavuot are:
- Exodus 19-20 The glory of Adonai came down before Israel and He gave the 10 statements.
- Num. 28:26-31 a wave offering was given and the Priest waved two loaves of bread and new meat before the Lord. The wave offering expressed the peoples’ dependence on God for harvest and daily bread.
- Habakkuk 3:1-19 was a prayer to Adonai aligning with Israels deliverance from Egypt and His glory coming down upon them on Mt Sinai.
- Acts 1-2 shows the fulfillment of what Yeshua said to the disciples about sending a comforter, which was the Ruach HaKodesh (Holy Spirit).
As YHVH desires to pour out his spirit during this appointed time of refreshing, join us for our time of celebration. YHVH is renewing His covenant with His people, he has called us out from being scattered and drawn us into this Holy place. Not because of anything we’ve done, however it’s to bring glory to the name of YHVH and so the world will know He is God and we belong to him.
During our time of celebration, we as a community partake of the Lord’s Supper (communion). Because God has commanded that we adhere to His holy word in remembrance of Yeshua. Please examine yourself in regard to 1 Corinthians 11:28-29 “So let a person examine himself first, and then he may eat of the bread and drink from the cup; for a person who eats and drinks without recognizing the body eats and drinks judgment upon himself.”
