Book of Nevi’im (Prophets)
In this season we will study the Prophet writings that are aligned with the Torah cycle. The book of the Prophets expounds on Adonai’s relationship with Israel after the consummated covenant on Mt. Sinai.
The book of Nevi’im is comprised of eight books, Joshua, Judges, Samuel, Kings, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and the Twelve (Shneim-Asar).
- Joshua is depicted as the prophetic successor of Moses.
- Samuel the Prophet is a central figure of the book that bears his name.
- Elijah, Elisha, and several other named and unnamed Prophets figures are prominently in Kings.
Nevi’im reflects an awareness that Prophets & prophetic activity play an important role in each of these books. These Nevi’im are used to reference the Torah and to shine light on Yah’s kindness to Israel, their alliance with Him, and how Elohim will judge the nations. The Nevi’im display the contrast of Yah’s past provision for Israel in protection and discipline verses Israel’s disloyalty to Him while the Nevi’im builds a case on Yah’s behalf. Therefore, the Nevi’im will recall Israel’s sin while urging them to make teshuvah (return) to Torah, recalling and warning them if they fail to adhere to the Nevi’im’s call.
While we study the Nevi’im let us keep in mind that Israel is our example of how Elohim will deal with us if we do not yield to His voice of compassion.
We should ask ourselves an important question: “If I have not received the prophets of old with their prophetic message, how would I recognize and agree with seers and prophets of this age who as Y’shua quote and elaborate on God’s original message.”
“Anyone who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive the reward a prophet gets, and anyone who receives a tzaddik (righteous person) because he is a tzaddik will receive the reward a tzaddik gets.”
Matthew 10.41
